Edges

Edges represent the relationships between nodes in the network. They define how nodes are connected based on the underlying relationship data collected in the system. Through the Edges settings, you can control how connections are visually displayed — their style, direction, thickness, colour, and visibility — helping you understand interaction patterns and relationships within the network.

caution

All changes made in the Edges panel are applied to the currently selected view. Changes are visible immediately while working, but to keep them permanently you must click Save. Unsaved changes are discarded if you leave the Networks module.

Access the Edges Panel

  1. From the left-side toolbar, click the Edges icon — the Edges panel opens with two sections:
    • Edges Config — Controls behaviour and direction-related visualisation of edges.
    • All Edges (Edit Edges Style) — Controls the visual appearance of all edges and specific edge groups.

Edges Config

This section controls the behaviour and direction-related visualisation of edges:

  • Separate Bidirected Edges — Displays bidirectional relationships as two separate edges instead of a single combined connection.
  • Only Show Reciprocated Edges — Shows only edges where the relationship exists in both directions between nodes.
  • Highlight Reciprocated Edges — Emphasises bidirectional (mutual) relationships to make them more visible.
  • Dim One-way Edges — Reduces the visibility of one-directional relationships to focus attention on reciprocated connections.
  • Pointer Shape — Defines the shape of the edge direction indicator (e.g., arrow).
  • Pointer Size — Controls the size of the direction indicator on edges.
note

Changes in the Edges Config section do not take effect until you click Apply Changes.

All Edges (Edit Edges Style)

This section allows you to customise the visual appearance of all edges and specific edge groups.

  • All Edges — Apply styling changes (size, shape, colour, and other visual settings) to all edges at once.
  • Grouped Edges — Edges are automatically grouped based on relationship types defined in your data (e.g., Friendship, Disrespect). Each relationship type appears as a separate group. You can customise the appearance of each group individually, enabling clear visual distinction between different relationship types.

Show or Hide Edge Groups

  1. Locate the group you want to manage.
  2. Click the eye icon next to the group name to toggle visibility. When hidden, the group and its legend are removed from the network view.

Edit Edge Settings

  1. Click the Edit Settings icon next to All Edges or a Grouped Edges entry.
  2. Make changes and click Apply Changes.

To revert a grouped edges setting to inherit from All Edges, click the revert icon next to the specific setting.

note

Inherited settings are indicated by an information icon. Hover over it to see a tooltip explanation. Changes made to Grouped Edges settings override the corresponding All Edges settings.

Styles

Controls the visual appearance of edges. Applies to All Edges and Grouped Edges.

SettingDescription
TypeSelect the line style of the edge: solid, dashed, or dotted.
WidthAdjust the thickness of edges.
Custom CurvatureEnable and adjust the curvature of edges to create curved connections between nodes.
ColorSet the colour and opacity of edges.

Highlight Styles

Controls how edges appear when highlight filters are configured for the network. Applies to All Edges only.

SettingDescription
TypeSelect the line style for highlighted edges: solid, dashed, or dotted.
WidthAdjust the thickness of highlighted edges.
ColorSet the colour and opacity used to emphasise highlighted edges.

Width Range

Allows you to vary edge thickness dynamically based on a selected attribute. Applies to All Edges only.

SettingDescription
AttributeSelect a numerical attribute to control edge width. Only numerical attributes are supported.
Width RangeDefine the minimum and maximum width values. Edges are scaled proportionally based on the selected attribute values.
note

When Width Range is enabled, the Width setting in the Styles section is disabled, as width scaling takes priority.

Color Range

Allows you to apply dynamic colouring to edges based on a selected attribute. Applies to All Edges only.

SettingDescription
AttributeSelect a numerical attribute to control edge colour. Only numerical attributes are supported.
From / ToDefine the colour gradient range. Edges are coloured progressively between the selected colours based on their attribute values.
note

When Color Range is enabled, the Color setting in the Styles section is disabled, as colour scaling takes priority.
