Keyframes

Keyframes allow you to create visual snapshots of the current network view and presentation state within the Networks module. A keyframe captures the network exactly as it is currently displayed, including visible nodes, edges, filters, styling, and other visual changes applied at that moment.

You can create multiple keyframes to represent different network perspectives, visual states, or analysis stages. Keyframes can then be played sequentially like presentation slides to demonstrate network structures, relationships, and data insights.

caution

All changes made in the Keyframes panel are applied to the currently selected view. To keep changes permanently, click Save. Unsaved changes are discarded if you leave the Networks module.

Access the Keyframes Panel

  1. From the left-side toolbar, click the Keyframes icon — the Keyframes panel opens. Existing keyframes are displayed in the panel if available.

Create and Configure a Keyframe

  1. In the Keyframes panel, click + Add.
  2. Configure the keyframe settings:
    • Name — Enter a name for the keyframe.
    • End Delay — Set the delay time (in seconds) after the keyframe finishes playing before the next keyframe starts.
    • Description — Add a description using the editor. It is displayed as a subtitle when the keyframe is played.
    • Conditions (optional) — Control when a keyframe is displayed during playback. To add a condition, click Add Condition and configure:
      • Network — Select a relationship network from the available relationship types, then choose an Analysis Category: Graph, ERGM, or ALAAM.
      • Target Attribute (ALAAM only) — Select the target attribute used for the ALAAM condition.
      • Field — Select a metric or field related to the selected network and analysis type. Available fields update dynamically based on the selected options.
      • Operator — Select a comparison operator.
      • Value — Enter the numeric value used for the condition comparison.
  3. Click Create — the keyframe becomes active and is added to the Keyframes panel.
note

You can add multiple conditions to a single keyframe. If a keyframe's conditions are not met, an information icon appears next to it and it will not be included during playback.

  1. While the keyframe is active, you can continue modifying the network view using the Nodes, Edges, and Filters tools — these changes become part of the active keyframe configuration.
caution

Layout and Interactions settings cannot be modified while a keyframe is active. The latest saved Layout and Interactions settings are used as the base state for all active keyframes.

  1. Click Done at the bottom of the page to finish the keyframe configuration.

Play or Stop Keyframes

  1. Open the Keyframes panel.
  2. Click Play — keyframes are played sequentially based on their order, conditions, and configured settings. You can reorder keyframes at any time by dragging them within the panel. During playback, keyframe descriptions are displayed as subtitles and audio narration is played.
  3. To stop playback, click Stop.
note

Only keyframes whose conditions are satisfied are included during playback.

Manage a Keyframe

  1. Locate the desired keyframe.
  2. Click the three-dot menu for the keyframe.
  3. Select one of the following options:
    • Edit — Opens the keyframe's settings to modify its configuration.
    • Play — Plays the selected keyframe.
    • Duplicate — Creates a copy of the keyframe and its configuration.
    • Apply Settings to View — Applies the keyframe's saved visualisation settings to the current network view.
    • Delete — Permanently removes the keyframe.
