Nodes
The Nodes panel allows you to view and customise how nodes are displayed within the network. You can adjust visual properties such as size, colour, labels, and other attributes to better understand patterns and highlight important elements.
All changes made in the Nodes panel are applied to the currently selected view. Changes are visible immediately while you are working. To keep them permanently, click Save. Unsaved changes are discarded if you leave the Networks module.
Access the Nodes Panel
- From the left-side toolbar, click the Nodes icon — the Nodes panel opens with three sections:
- Nodes Config — Controls how node information is displayed on the network.
- Grouping Attributes — Groups nodes based on selected attributes.
- All Nodes (Edit Nodes Style) — Customises the appearance of all nodes and specific node groups.
Nodes Config
This section controls how node information is displayed on the network.
- Label Field — Defines which field is shown as the label (text) for each node in the graph. Available field groups are:
- Node Meta —
id(Node ID),nodeType(Node type name),title(default label). - Node Attributes — Custom fields defined for the node type (e.g., classroom, category).
- Analytics — Computed metrics and analysis results (visible only if analytics have been run).
- Node Meta —
- Avatar Field — Defines which field is used as the visual representation (avatar) of each node. Uses the same field groups as the Label Field.
By default, labels use the Title field. Changing this setting overrides the default label.
Selecting an avatar field alone does not display avatars. To display avatars, set the node Shape to [avatar] in the All Nodes → Edit Settings → Styles section.
Grouping Attributes
This section allows you to group nodes based on selected attributes to better organise and analyse the network.
Group Nodes
- Select one or more attributes from the Node Meta or Node Attributes categories.
- Nodes are grouped based on shared values of the selected attribute(s). Each group is visually distinguished using colour-coding and a name based on the selected attributes. Corresponding legends are displayed below the network to help identify each group.
- The created groups are listed in the All Nodes section with their assigned colour and name, along with an option to edit visual settings.
If multiple attributes are selected, nodes are grouped based on all possible combinations of those attributes. Each unique combination forms a separate group if matching nodes exist.
Clear All Selected Attributes
- Click the delete icon next to the Grouping Attributes title.
- All selected attributes are cleared and the network returns to its default ungrouped view.
All Nodes (Edit Nodes Style)
This section allows you to customise the appearance of nodes in the currently selected view.
- All Nodes — Apply styling changes (size, shape, colour, and other visual settings) to all nodes at once.
- Grouped Nodes — When grouping is applied from the Grouping Attributes section, each group is listed separately. You can customise the appearance of each group individually for clear visual distinction.
Show or Hide Node Groups
- Locate the group you want to manage.
- Click the eye icon next to the group name to toggle visibility. When hidden, the group and its legend are removed from the network view.
Edit Node Settings
- Click the Edit Settings icon next to All Nodes or a Grouped Nodes entry.
- Make changes and click Apply Changes.
To revert a grouped nodes setting to inherit from All Nodes, click the revert icon next to the specific setting.
Inherited settings are indicated by an information icon. Hover over it to see a tooltip explanation. Settings applied to Grouped Nodes override the corresponding All Nodes settings.
Styles
Controls the default appearance of nodes, including size, shape, colour, shadow, and border. Applies to All Nodes and Grouped Nodes.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Size | Adjust the size of nodes using the slider or by entering a value. |
| Shape | Select the shape of nodes from available options (e.g., circle, [avatar]). |
| Color | Choose the fill colour of nodes and adjust its opacity. |
| Shadow (optional) | Configure colour, X offset, Y offset, and blur (shadow softness). |
| Border (optional) | Configure thickness, style (solid, dashed, dotted), and colour. |
Highlight Styles
Controls how nodes appear when highlight filters are configured for the network. Applies to All Nodes only.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Size Scale | Adjust how much larger or smaller highlighted nodes appear compared to their default size. |
| Color | Choose the fill colour of highlighted nodes and adjust its opacity. |
| Shadow (optional) | Configure colour, X offset, Y offset, and blur (shadow softness). |
| Border (optional) | Configure thickness, style (solid, dashed, dotted), and colour. |
Labels (optional)
Displays text labels on nodes. You can enable or disable labels and configure their position and font settings. Applies to All Nodes only.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Position | Choose where the label appears relative to the node (e.g., top, bottom). |
| Font | Customise font family, font size, font weight, colour, and opacity. |
Size Range (optional)
Dynamically scales node sizes based on a selected attribute. Applies to All Nodes only.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Attribute | Select a node attribute to determine node size. Sizes are automatically adjusted based on the attribute's values. |
| Range | Define the minimum and maximum size for nodes. The system scales node sizes proportionally within this range. |
When Size Range is enabled, the Size setting in the Styles section is disabled, as size scaling takes priority.
Color Range (optional)
Dynamically applies colours to nodes based on a selected attribute. Applies to All Nodes only.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Attribute | Select a node attribute to control node colour. Colours are assigned based on the attribute's values. |
| From / To | Define the colour gradient range. The system interpolates colours between the selected range based on attribute values. |
When Color Range is enabled, the Color setting in the Styles section is disabled, as colour scaling takes priority.
