Question Common Properties

Question properties are organised into two groups:

  • Common Properties — Shared across all or most question types. They define core behaviours such as visibility, logic conditions, layout, validation, and data handling.
  • Question-Specific Properties — Unique to individual question types. They provide specialised configuration options that appear only when a particular question type is selected. See Question-Specific Properties for details.

When working with question properties, you may need to refer to both groups. Use common properties to explore settings that apply broadly, and refer to the question-specific properties for configuration unique to a particular element.

General

The General section contains the core settings used to define the identity, visibility, and basic behaviour of a question or survey element.

  • Display Name — An internal or alternative label for the question, used for reference purposes within the system. Not visible to respondents.
  • Name — The unique identifier of the question, used in logic conditions, data storage, and integrations. Keep it consistent and meaningful.
  • Title — The main text of the question displayed to respondents.
  • Description — Additional context or instructions for the question, displayed alongside it based on layout settings.
  • Visible — Controls whether the question is displayed to respondents.
  • Required — Marks the question as mandatory. Respondents must provide an answer before proceeding.
  • Read-only — Prevents users from modifying the question's value. Useful for displaying pre-filled or calculated data.
  • Show the Comment Area — Adds an optional comment field below the question, allowing respondents to provide additional information.
  • Input Area Placeholder — Hint text shown inside the input field to guide users. Disappears once typing begins.
  • Node Field — Maps the question's response to a specific data field related to nodes or respondents. Available options:
    • node_title — Links the response to a node's title.
    • respondent_title — Links to the respondent's identifier.
    • both_title — Applies to both node and respondent.
    • email — Stores responses as email data.
    • mobile — Stores responses as mobile number data.
    • others — Default or unassigned mapping.

Logic

The Logic section defines dynamic behaviour for questions, including visibility, editability, required conditions, and how values are set or updated based on user input or expressions.

note

Not all logic properties apply to every question type. The Properties Panel displays only the options relevant to the selected question or element. Conditions are set in the Expression field using the Expression Builder.

  • Visible if — Defines a condition that determines whether the question is displayed. The question becomes visible only when the condition evaluates to true.
  • Editable if — Controls whether the question can be edited by the respondent based on a condition.
  • Required if — Specifies a condition under which the question becomes mandatory.
  • Default Value Expression — Automatically assigns a default value to the question based on an expression, useful for pre-filling answers using logic or responses from other questions.
  • Reset Value if — Defines a condition that clears the current value of the question when met.
  • Set Value if — Assigns a specific value to the question when a condition is satisfied, used to dynamically update answers based on other inputs.
  • Hide the Question if it Contains No Choices — Automatically hides the question if there are no available answer options.
  • Choices are Visible if — Defines conditions that control when individual choices are shown.
  • Choices are Selectable if — Specifies conditions that determine whether a choice can be selected. Choices may remain visible but become disabled until the condition is met.
  • Columns are Visible if — Defines conditions that control when specific columns are displayed.
  • Rows are Visible if — Specifies conditions that determine when rows are displayed.
  • Bindings — Links a dynamic panel to another question in the survey, allowing the panel's behaviour to be controlled based on that question's values.
  • Template Visible if — Defines conditions that control when the panel template is displayed.

Layout

The Layout section controls how a question or element is positioned and displayed within the survey.

  • Parent Page — Specifies which page the question belongs to. Useful when organising or moving questions between pages.
  • Display the Question on a New Line — Forces the question to appear on a separate line rather than sharing space with other elements.
  • Hide Question Number — Removes the automatic numbering displayed next to the question.
  • Panel Expand State — Controls whether a panel-type element is expanded or collapsed by default, or inherits the survey setting.
  • Title Location — Defines where the question title is displayed relative to the input field:
    • Inherit — Uses the survey-level setting.
    • Top — Displays above the input.
    • Bottom — Displays below the input.
    • Left — Displays beside the input.
    • Hidden — Hides the title.
  • Description Location — Specifies where the description text appears:
    • Inherit — Uses the default setting.
    • Under the input — Displays below the input field.
    • Under the title — Displays below the title.
  • Error Location — Determines where validation error messages are shown:
    • Inherit — Uses the default setting.
    • Top — Displays above the question.
    • Bottom — Displays below the question.
  • Add Indents — Adds horizontal spacing to the question to visually nest or offset it within the layout.
  • Width (in CSS-accepted values) — Sets the width of the question (e.g., 100%, 300px).
  • Minimum Width (in CSS-accepted values) — Defines the minimum width the question can shrink to.
  • Maximum Width (in CSS-accepted values) — Defines the maximum width the question can expand to.
  • Column Count — Specifies how many columns the question content is divided into, allowing multi-column layouts where supported.
  • Show Column Headers — Displays or hides the column titles at the top of the matrix.
  • Vertical Alignment — Controls how content within matrix cells is aligned vertically.
  • Alternate Rows — Applies alternating background styles to rows to improve readability.
  • Columns Layout — Defines how columns are arranged within the matrix:
    • Horizontal — Columns are displayed side by side (default layout).
    • Vertical — Columns are stacked vertically for a more compact view.
  • Show Horizontal Scrollbar — Displays a horizontal scrollbar when the matrix content exceeds the available width.
  • Nested Column Count — Specifies how many columns are grouped together when using a vertical layout.
  • Minimum Column Width (in CSS-accepted values) — Sets the minimum width for each column to maintain proper spacing.
  • Cell Error Location — Determines where validation error messages are displayed within each cell:
    • Inherit — Uses the default setting.
    • Top — Displays above the cell.
    • Bottom — Displays below the cell.
  • Row Header Width (in CSS-accepted values) — Defines the width of the row header (left-side labels for each row).

Data

The Data properties define how responses are stored, formatted, and managed in survey results.

  • Store Answers in the Following JSON Field — Specifies the key name used to store the question's response in the survey result JSON.
  • Use Display Values in Dynamic Texts — Uses the visible (display) text of selected options instead of their underlying values when referenced in dynamic text expressions.
  • Clear the Value if the Question Becomes Hidden — Defines when the question's value is cleared if hidden due to logic conditions:
    • Inherit — Follows the survey's default behaviour.
    • None — Keeps the value even if hidden.
    • When the survey is completed — Clears at the end of the survey.
    • When the question becomes hidden — Clears immediately upon hiding.
    • When the question or its panel/page becomes hidden — Clears when any parent container is hidden.
  • Data Type — Determines how the answer is stored and interpreted in results:
    • Auto Detect — Automatically determines the type based on input.
    • String — Stores as text.
    • Number — Stores as a numeric value.
    • Boolean — Stores as true/false.
    • Date — Stores as a date value.
  • Value Property Name — Defines the property name used to store each selected choice value in the survey result JSON.

Validation

The Validation properties control how user input is checked before submission, ensuring responses meet defined rules and maintain data quality.

  • "Required" Error Message — The custom message displayed when a required question is left unanswered. Overrides the default system message.
  • Validators — Custom validation rules using logical expressions. To add a validator:
    1. Click the (+) button.
    2. Define the Error Message shown when the validation condition fails.
    3. Define the condition in the Validation Expression field using the Expression Builder.
  • Maximum Length (in characters) — Specifies the maximum number of characters a respondent can enter. A value of -1 means no limit is applied.
note

You can add multiple validators to enforce different rules on a single question.

Others

The Others properties include additional configuration options that control how a question is rendered in specific scenarios.

  • Read-only Render As — Defines how the question is displayed when set to read-only:
    • Auto — The system automatically selects the most appropriate display format.
    • Text — Displays the response as plain text (non-interactive).
